I'm starting to shoot weddings widescreen with a SONY DSR-500. When I make the raw footage copy direct from a Sony DSC-30 DVCAM player to my Standalone Pioneer DVD Recorder are there any settings on the player or recorder to insure it will be presented widescreen on a widescreen monitor and with black borders on the top and bottom on a full screen 4:3 monitor? I don't want it to play compressed.

Yeah, I've noticed this quirk in Pioneer DVD Recorders. Other DVD Recorders have a setting where you can change the playback A/R to 16:9 (such as a Toshiba I once used), but not Pioneer.

I've recorded some HD material from a Hughes HD DirecTV Receiver, which of course was in 16:9, and when I played it back on a 4:3 TV, it filled up the whole screen putting everything out of A/R.

Here is the method I use when recording 16:9 content to my Pioneer DVD Recorder.

    Record to DVD-RW
Extract from DVD-RW to mpeg (TMPGENC mpeg editor)
Cut the mpeg as needed (Womble Mpeg-VCR)
Patch the file(s) from A/R 4:3 to 16:9 (I also make sure the bitrate, resolution, fps and everything else matches up, do the entire file too)
    Author to DVD with TDA

I don't know of a way to change the A/R without taking it to the computer first, but this way works and works well.

That's true, everything I put thru tmpge plays correctly on widescreen and on 4:3 monitors i.e. it adds top and bottom borders to the 4:3 screen. But how can I make this happen when dubbing directly to the Pioneer?

I haven't seen a Pioneer DVD Recorder capable of setting itself to 16:9. So like I said, you're going to have to go to the computer first.

  5. rip the pioneer dvd copy to your hard drive and use IFOEdit to change the 4:3 flag to 16:9
