Befor I begain I'm not sure what forum to put this in so if this is the wrong one I apoligize. I seem to have a problem. I exercise in the same room as I have my computer. While I'am on the treadmill I like to watch movies on my computer. About 2-3 months ago I would rent a movie put it in the dvd-rom and I would get a message saying no disk in drive. Now I have never had this problem before, only with recent releases. I've updated the firmware, and nero info tool says the drive is working fine. Now I know that dvd's have copy protection on them but there is no law saying you can't watch a dvd on your computer. My system is a Dell Dimension XPS GEN 3, the dvd-rom is a HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GRA4120B. Is there maybe a softwre program out there that can get this drive to read the new dvd's. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

What software are you using now to view dvds on your computer? Although Nero Info tool says the drive is working fine doesn't mean much. Your dvd-rom laser could be dying. Buy another drive like a dvd burner and see if that will work. Dvd burners are cheap right now.

Also try media player classic. It can play a lot. Maybe your software player isn't reading it properly.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

Thanks for your replies but I don't think it has anything to do with the player. I have the latest version of power dvd. The thing is when I put in a DVD and go to my computer and open up that drive it says that it is empty. For some reason the drive isn't reading that there is a DVD in it. As far as the laser going bad the computer is only about 3 years old. And I can put in any older DVD that I have and it works fine. Its seems to be with recent releases. I'm not sure if it has to do with newer copyright protection on the disks but you should be able to watch a DVD on your computer. The DVD-ROM can both read and burn DVD's. Help.

    It's a Rom-Reader not a burner.

No disk in drive happens with a lot of the cheapo drives, like this EPO piece of **** I bought before. Buy brandname stuff and avoid the headaches.

This happened with my Toshiba laptop (dvdr2002 drive)at about three years, first wouldn't read burned dvd's now won't read any movies, but will read data discs. It works fine with external usb 2.0 drive If you haven't already you might try cleaning the laser before trashing the drive.
