    Hey Everyone,

any idea how to make my dvd rom spin immediately when a disk is entered?

I keep trying to watch a movie on my laptop & the movie (Righteous Kill) will not spin up, but all my other movies will spin up, so I was just wondering if anyone knew how to make the dvd rom spin immediately upon inserting a disk?

Also, for some reason, my pc keeps telling me that the disk is not formatted, even though I know the movie is sitting there on the dvd...

    Any ideas?

What kind of DVD media was used for the movie?

If this DVD was burned, not pressed/commercially produced, then there are a number of possibilities. Perhaps the burn was bad, or the media is defective, or the session was not closed. Maybe your DVD-ROM drive is picky when it comes to reading burned media, or is starting to fail.

[Edit] Also, what is the make and model of the drive? It may not be able to read all the different formats of burnable media, especially if it is an old drive.

Nope, this is a rental movie that I was trying to watch on my laptop in the kitchen while my kids were watching barney in the living room...lol...

As for the make and model of my dvd rom, it is a TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L632N ATA Device...

I had Winblows check for driver updates to the drive, but there weren't any.

Further, I have gone through the device's properties options and gone through the device (mis)manager and still could not find the option to make it automatically keep spinning, no matter what the disk is saying.

I am kinda at a loss here...I just got home from work, am finally having dinner at 1 am, and will be heading off to bed shortly after I am done writing this and eating, which brings me to tomorrow, when my kids will be watching saturday morning cartoons while I go out of my skull trying to watch a movie on my laptop while they are watching their shows, and will once again fail until I have to return the damned movie and go to work again...

/me gets off my damned soap box again

    Sorry, tangent...I'm wiped...g'nite

[edit] btw, I am running vista sp1 and my laptop is a hp pavilion dv9000 entertainment series (a dv9810 to be exact)...[/edit]

If it is a rented movie, could you possibly have been given a Blu-Ray disc by mistake? If it is just a regular DVD, the disc is defective.

I have had DVD discs that were smudved and scratched to the point of being unplayable, but they were always recognized by my drives and DVD players. As far as I know, there is no way to force a disc to spin up and play. Register a complaint with the rental service/store.

Thanks for the advice, think I am going to do that....

    As for being a blu-ray, nah...it's a redbox rental...lol...

I was lying in bed last night trying to go to sleep & my wife was snoring, and the kids had gone in there and fallen asleep, so I just went into their room next to mine and watched the movie (Righteous Kill) in there on their dvd player...Good movie btw...

But I just think it is odd that for some reason that disk will not open on my laptop...ah well...back off to work now....

    Thanks for the help....

Rental DVD - try cleaning it - like a bit of soap and water - no circular wipes.

Eh, I returned the rental, just struck me as strange that it would not spin up in my laptop...probably some new copyright protection scheme...

Don't they know that when we like movies (especially when they have PACINO and DENIRO in them!) we buy them?! GEESH!

    lol

Seriously, I think I probably own just about every Pacino and DeNiro movie there is (ok, so I threw the movie Simone out, but! Can ya blame me?!)

Anyways, I am still curious, because I remember on my old desktop, back in my Win2K Pro days (about a year ago...lol) there was an option somewhere to make it so that the drive did not spin down during a transfer or a burn, which shortened the life of the burner, but more than made up for it by increasing speed and reliability of the cd rom, especially when copying scratched up data discs back to your pc....

Anyways, they probably got rid of that feature in Vista...wouldn't surprise me....thanks again for the help all...
