i skimmed through the sticky but couldnt find my problem, i have a tape from a while back like a late 80's weekend cartoons recording and i found it today and stuck it into the vcr, to my surprise it still works but the audio sounds like someone vibrating their vocal chords into an anoying echo-y effect, is there a way to restore it or is it lost forever? thanks for the solution in advance

If it is the HiFi audio track, try adjusting the tracking. If that doesn't work see if your VCR can use the linear (mono) track. If it is the mono track that sounds like that, see if the edge of the tape is ruffled. If the tape isn't ruffled, and you are using the mono track, clean the VCR.

Wonderful advice. I think that basically covered everything.
