mp4 player with usb socket

Hi ya .I have just brought a tevion dvd player that plays mp4s, It has a usb for plugging mp3 players in and a sdcard slot. I have a 320 external hard drive and I tried it in the usb on the player but it picked up nothing , So I was wondering whether there may be some software I can download to change the usb settings so it can pick up my hard drive and let me play the movies I have on my pc through the dvd player .

Have you checked the manual to verify the usb port specs and whether or not it even supports external HD's? It's possible the port isn't enabled, or it may have HD size limits, and/or it may require the HD be formatted in a different / special way.
