Ok, so ill convert the bin/cue to mpeg in vcdgear. I heard vcds work on the dvp-642, that means its reading the dat file..So what should i do?

Bssically you want to get the mpg from the bin and just burn that as a data disc. I've never used VCDGear but since it's freeware - nothing would be lost in trying
You can also burn to an RW for testing.
If you have ISO Buster, try this

Will the player play MPEG and MPG, or just mpg?

Yes, you can put several DAT files (from VCD) on ISO data DVDs and the 642 will play them. There's no need to "convert" to MPG.

Thank you
I will just use vcdgear and do cue/bin -> .dat

I tried a 16:9 VOB file from a DVD -- it played but it was 4:3 with the edges cropped. I didn't have a chance to check the players settings. So I'm not sure if it will play SVCD files with the right aspect ratio. I'll see if I can find one for at test later.

I wouldn't expect it to play SVCDs in the right aspect ratio. One of the big downsides to this player is that its SVCD support sucks. It supports only a subset of the format's specifications. For example, it won't support a secondary audio track or more than 1 subtitle stream, even though the format specs allow for 2 separate, selectable audio tracks and up to 4 selectable subtitle streams. In fact, if the player finds subtitles on your SVCD, it will play the first stream and it can't be turned off! Thanks Philips.
