  1. Hi,

I have converted some vacation videos that we have on VHS to digital, and I was wondering if it is possible for me to beable to test the dvd before burning?

By test I mean check the dvd menu and so forth. Because I have tryied it like 3 other times where I have burnt the dvd and then it skips the dvd menu...

  2. use a RW, after burning go to your player and tv and watch it, if all is good, burn it on a R.

it's just a matter of experience, my first 3 dvd were all bad, so I got RW to play with.

I use PowerDVD to access the Video_TS folder on the hard drive prior to burning.

If you have windvd , nero showtime or powerdvd installed .

Win98 / win2000 , use ifoedit to playback dvd from folder ... it will tell you if there are any issue's , which can then be fixed using pgcedit .

For xp , use koolplaya ... it's better than powerdvd or windvd ... nero showtime seem's to perform correctly ... again , if error in nav , fix with pgcedit .

You can get away from commercial product's by installing the codec's for dvd playback , such as freedvdcodec , ac3_filter's , and that sub filter , use with koolplaya .

When playing back authored dvd title , when error appear's , remmember this point , and open authored dvd in pgcedit , and head straight to where error occured , check nav command's here , and also check for any other part's that have nav command's linked to this point and correct them as required ... save dvd and replay ... if all's well , burn it .

Check the guide's section for some of my guide's , they contain some info on navigational pointer's (ie , what link's and where)

  5. I usually use VLC, but I think I will give KoolPlaya a try. I've seen it recommended several times recently.

  6. I'd use a RW disk, this way you can test it in your target set-top player.

I can't agree more. The only true test of whether it works or not in your brand player is to try it. RW allows you do so without wasting a disc if things aren't exactly the way you intended.

If there's a difference between what's on the hard drive and what's on the disc, there's a problem with your burning app, burner, or media. Menu layout and navigation errors can and should be caught and corrected before anything is burnt.
Most of what I do is just for myself and burning an RW is a waste of time, but if I'm doing a project for someone else I like to have someone else play/watch it as a final check (much like a writer has someone else proof read). Using an RW makes sense for this.
