I'm looking for a DVD recorder solely to record from a SONY DVCAM deck via Firewire. None of the above DVD Recorders are good for me because of these reasons:
JVC SR-MV40: always 3 frames out of sync. So was my old JVC DR-M10. Even if I record directly from my Premiere 6.5 timeline via Firewire. The RCA inputs are in sync, but I never use them. I tried two of these SR-MV40's.
Panasonic DMR-ES15S: Not compatible with SONY. Every 10 -20 seconds a few seconds of black appears on the screen. This was confirmed by Panasonic and by Circuit City.
SONY RDR-GX330. Ugly menu always pops up which I do not want but can't avoid. Also I can't control the SONY DVCAM deck from the DVD Recorder's Remote control, which I can do with the JVC.
I also like the ability to set my compression rate in 5 minute increments rather than just 30 minute increments.
Any suggestions as to what I can buy?

Buy a Pioneer DVR-310H-s from NEWEGG.COM
This is a slightly older model and has been sold out but NEWEGG.COM recently put some up on their website. Maybe they found some in their warehouse that there were unaware of. Who knows. All I know is you better order one fast before they are all gone.

I should point out that while this should work A-OK with your camcorder I do not know if it will work with FIREWIRE out from the computer. I was under the impression that most stand alone DVD recorders with FIREWIRE ports were made to only work with camcorders. I know JVC does not have that restriction but I do not know about the Pioneer.
I do know it is one hell of a great DVD recorder and you can select the bitrate you want in 5-10 minute increments. Actually with really long recording times ... times you probably wouldn't use ... I think the increment goes to 10 or more minutes but between 1 hour and 2 hours the increments are as little as 5 minutes for the most part excpet when you get to 1hour 50 minute mark ... I think the next jump from there is the 2hour mark.

Never heard about that problem on the JVC. I would take a better look at your firewire card, that might actually be the true problem.
Most recorders will not work with a computer timeline output. JVC is one of the only ones.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

The audio delay is obvious when recording from my computer, from my SONY DSR-30 DVCAM deck and from my SONY DRS-20 DVCAM deck, but only on the three JVC DVD recorders I tested.

That still does not eliminate the card as possibly having a problem.

Here are the recording times for the Pioneer DVR-310
The right column is the side you want to look at as the left column is VR mode which is not suggested. In other words always use DVD Video mode instead of VR mode.
As for how to read the chart in terms of resolution ... up to MN 19 uses Full D1 resolutioin (720x480 NTSC). The MN 18 thru MN 7 uses Half D1 resolution (352x480 NTSC) ... MN 6 thru MN 1 uses "VCD" resolutiion (352x240 NTSC). The MN numbers are from the right side of the chart (DVD Video mode).

What firewire card are you referring to? I'm recording directly from a Sony deck to the JVC recorder.

Thanks Fulcilives. I bought the Pioneer DVR-310 and it seems to work best.

I have to agree the Pioneer is a nice machine. I bought mine from Newegg also but I initially thought the machine was defective. Even the Pioneer tech thought so too. As it turns out, my clarifier did not work with the Pioneer. I have since purchased the AVT-810 and now it works.
On the other hand, the Sony is not a good buy IMO. The CP on that thing is evil. Even the AVT-8710 did not work. I originally bought the Pioneer first, was going to return it then I bought the Sony. Its a good thing I kept the Pioneer. The Sony is going back.
I have been through 5 recorders in the past month and a half(3 toshibas, 1 sony and 1 Pioneer) and I am really glad this saga is over.
Thanks to Fulcilives for recommending the Pioneer! -

One last thing ... you said the SONY would not record even though you were using the AVT-8710 ... that seems very unbelievalbe to me ... sorry but the AVT-8710 should remove all forms of copy protection ... except maybe the broadcast flag.
Can you go into more detail as to what source material gave you trouble with the SONY even though you were using the AVT-8710?

With the Sony I could not get any video signal. I could get audio however. All I could see was a gray screen. I have never experienced that before. I used S video cables. I was suprised myself that the AVT-8710 did not work with the Sony. I double checked my cable setup with the Sony and everything was correct even the input selection from the remote. I believe the only thing that you can record with the Sony would be TV or from a VCR. Hope this helps.
