It's probably CMC, actually. I'd pass.

I bought some Staples CD-Rs a few years ago and they were complete shit. Most of them would either report an error during burning or simply not read a few days later. I ended up throwing them away.

Granted they might not be the same manufacturer. But I figure if Staples will put their name on crap once they will do it again. I will never buy Staples brand media again.

Furthermore, you can get a comparable deal on Verbatims. Last winter there was a deal for $1.50-$1.60 a disc. If price is that important to you wait for a sale on good media. If you buy these I would bet there is a good chance you will end up with coasters.

    Just my 2 cents.

  4. It is indeed ritek, I made 2 burns last night, no coaster yet.

  5. Just want to report back, I don't know if it's this media or the new NEC 3550a burner that I just got, every single one of the Staples DL Disc that I burned, 15 so far, works flawlessly on all my DVD players(Zenith, Oppo, Panasonic, HTPC).

I used had big problem on ritek DL media, no matter it's Memorex or Ridata, it always breaks at the layer change. Not with this Staples DL disc, it plays very smooth from beginning to the end, no more breakups or hiccups. Went ahead bought 2 more spindles at <$25 each AC, less than a buck a disc, great deal on a great media!

Last year Staples brand were Taiwan (CMC i think). Last week Staple's brand said "Made in India". My experience with "Made in India" Playo's from Staples was bad. "Made in Taiwan" Playo's from Staples were OK. I remain wary of "Made in India" DVD blanks.

I only use these for unimportant TV captures. I wouldn't use any of them for priority saves.

PS: Missed that these were dual layer. The above was for single layer.

  8. I just went to my local Staples after reading this thread to see if they carried these DL disks. I almost wet my pants when I saw that they were trying to charge 80-freakin'-dollars for the things!! THEY MUST BE OUT OF THEIR RABBIT MINDS!!! That's $3.56 per disk!! You can get a 30-pack of Verbatim's at Sam's for $60! What the hell is wrong with those idiots?? Uh, I think I'll pass.

@edDV Staples had a runningsale on those Playo single layer discs at the holidays this year. Because I am not picky and always willing to try a disc even after getting bad discs from the same company my conclusion was anything Playo is bad. Will that stop me from trying again? Of course not, but I had several bad spindles from Taiwan and India. I even got a bad pack that was made in Mexico or Brazil (somewhere on this side of the pond).

  10. Well I'm glad you're willing to take those risks, ROF. As for me, I don't have (or choose not to spend - let's put it that way) the jack on bad media. Especially if it's horrifically over-priced, like this crap is. Quite frankly, the whole DL media market is really pissing me the f*&@ off. This media has been out for years, but the prices are still up in the friggin' stratosphere. What: will next-gen disks have to be out for 10 YEARS before the manufacturers decide to drop the price on DL media???

Perhaps it's demand. Perhaps the manufacturers need to see more demand before they begin to drop the price. But why should the consumer fork over $2 or higher for DL media when SL media is much cheaper, more proven, and the compression methods so good??? It doesn't make sense. Hopefully the manufacturers will pull their heads out of their AHHSSes and discount this stuff before the next-gen media renders it totally obsolete! That's my take....

Demand drives any market, that's the way things work. In any case, DVD players have been available for about 10 years now. DVD burning followed and dual layer burning is still relatively new in the scope of things. Prices are dirt cheap, the problem is people expect these discs to cost pennies which will not happen. They would have to manufacture them at a loss to do so. Nobody I know of builds something just so they can lose money.

  12. This dual layer 25 pack was on sale last week at Staples for $39, after some coupons which you can easily found on internet, it went down to ~$22. The sale might be over now.

It is over in my area. They now sell for the regular price of $59

  14. Hollywood might be the invisible hand behind the high cost of the dual layer media. Who else are in demand for dual layers besides those making video backups? I wouldn't mind backing up my data over multiple 4.7 GB SL discs when the cost of SL media is so cheap.

The same people who are the majority using SL discs and it doesn't involve stealing. People are using them to back up data or as support projects where SL discs are not an option and DLT Tape is a waste of money and space. DL discs are a perfect option for high quality video projects that won't fit on the small capacity SL discs.
