Recently I got Pioneer 111D which takes 93 minutes to rip using DVDShrink compared to 35 minutes on NEC 3520A on another PC for the exact same DVD. Could there be that much difference in rip speed between NEC and Pioneer, or could there be some settings or maybe firmware update that might improve Pioneer rip speed? Both PCs have 512 MB memory runniing Windows 2000 SP4, and the major difference between them is one is 750 MHZ while the other is 1900 MHZ. I'd think the CPU speed could make some difference, but I wouldn't think the 750 MHZ PC should take over 2.5 times longer to rip.

Unfortunately the PIONEER 111D drive is riplocked which is why it takes long for you to rip a dvd movie. The only work around on this is to use ALA'S MEDIACODESPEEDEDIT hack. Read the link below on how to install and use it. I don't use it because the BENQ 1640 & 1650 drives have no riplock although others will use MCSE to rip at faster speeds. I have my TOSHIBA 1612 & 1712 & LITEON 167T & 166 DVD-ROM's to do the ripping for me unless I come across a disc that can't be ripped I'll use one of my dvd burners.

Does the cross flash of the 11D to 111L via the Dangerous Brothers firmware eliminate rip lock? I plan to corss flash to enable bit setting for +R single layer media anyway.

Be warned. I had a crash when using DB's hack which killed the drive. Fortunately I was able to return the dead drive as I had just got the thing.

THe 111 has riplock?? I haven't tried ripping any hollywood dvds with it yet. I just got mine a month ago.

But it seems plenty fast enough on my homemade dvds.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm glad I left my microadvantage 4x sl burner in the computer. I'll just use that for commercial ripping.

the cross flash to d.b. 111L does not remove the rip lock. it does make it region free, and allows bitsetting on all +r's though. also you could use it as a label flash burner(if you find the software). just flashed mine to 111L_826 with no problems.

In another thread I read advice to do a Benq firmware flash in safe mode. Could running the flash in safe mode have helped prevent the crash that killed ROF's 111D, and would it be a good idea to do all firmware flashing in safe mode?

By switching optical drives between the 2 PCs I confirmed the 750 PC is indeed that much slower than the 1900 PC by running DVDShrink again on same DVD referred to in my initial post. It took 32 minutes for the 111D on the 1900 PC compared to 35 minutes for the 3520A on the same 1900 PC, and this test seems to answer my initial question.

Buy another BENQ 1650 and install it on your pc that has the PIONEER 111 drive. That way you can let the BENQ do the ripping for you. COMPUSA still has the rebadged BENQ 1650 drive on sale under the brand called NORWOOD MICRO for $39.99 after $20.00 instant rebate and a $20.00 mail in rebate. The BENQ 1650 has NO RIPLOCK.
