I've been using a 2002 magnavox that recently started scratching my discs - some of them that I've had for years.

Being a dvd collector I try to keep all my stuff in pristine condition - 99% of my dvds are scratch free.

So I'm a little paranoid about buying another dvd player, and while I've seen some great prices on cheap ones (the Etec's at Brandsmart have attractive prices - as low as $20) I don't want to risk feeding them my dvd collection and end up getting more scratched discs.

Anyone have any suggestions on what models to avoid, or better yet, what would be the best, most affordable dvd player that's reliable and almost guarenteed not to scratch your disc? I'd like it to last at least a year, if not a couple.
    Thanks

What type of scratches? I would guess circular. That would tell me the mechanism is damaged or there is a piece of foreign material stuck in there. The only thing that should be touching the disc while it is spinning is the center hub holder.

Players have come quite a ways since 2002. I would stick with a 'name' brand player, but just about any of them should do, unless you have some special requirements. Most have component and optical audio output, even the inexpensive ones, along with other nice features not commonly available a few years ago.

  4. I had saw circular scratch marks on one or two DVDs from the public libraries. Magavox is not a top brand either, You want to try a JVC or Toshiba or Pioneer, that will give you trouble free service till its laser die out.
