  3. Either try a websearch on your compaq model, or look at the motherboard. The name of it is usually around the pci slots.

    try here: http://www.motherboards.org/moboidtools.html

Or look around the motherboards.org site, I know there is something to help you out there, because I've used it. Just can't remember exactly where it is.

For many things I would have to agree. Even though the next board I buy will have almost VIA everything

Plenty if programs that'll id your motherboard.
    Sisoft Sandra standard (free)
    http://download.com.com/3000-2086-10132058.html?tag=list

    Belarc Advisor (free)
    http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Aida (free) Download from my website, this is a dos based program that can be run from a bootable floppy(system files only, not start up disk).
Download, unzip to a folder and copy just the aida.exe to the bootable floppy. boot to an A:\ prompt and type in aida, hit enter key and away you go. This program provides a lot of information aboyt your motherboard and other hardware. I use it to id motherboards that have no name or numbers on them. Compaq's are well known for this.

If it works, don't mess with it, don't tinker with it and don't break it.
