    I would avoid SONY-products,
From what i've experienced from there products they have compatibility issues with Audio-playback.

Because once i dubbed a VideoTape to another,
The video i dubbed onto was Sony, & the Original- tape i was dubbing from was in 'LP-Mode, So the copy i was making was in SP-Mode onto the sony-tape...

'But when i played back the copy 'NO AUDIO!

    Also
the Sony DVD-players i have used, don't playback any audio off Mono-DVD's

For DVD I only buy Pioneer (although I have an LG that my electricity providor gave me). They have served me well for many years - great quality in build and playback.

I would be more inclined to blame the problems on long play, which I have never liked or trusted. As for the tapes, chances are they aren't even made by Sony, just as most brand names don't manufacture their own discs any more.

At a guess, I'd say you either have very bad luck, or don't have your kit set up correctly.
