Does anyone know where a BTC 1004 can be found? I’m looking for a second drive that can read scratched up DVD’s (that I own) to back my collection. Will any BTC drive be this way?

My second choice for this is a Liteon SHM-165H6S or maybe an Aopen. I got some of my info from this thread:

Any ideas on a superior ripping drive are appreciated.

    Here's 2 BTC dvdroms from Computergeeks.com.
I'm not sure if they are equal to the BTC 1004 drive.
Liteon dvdroms are also good to use. I buy most of my dvdroms from Ebay.

I did just find this emprex writer from BTC under the Emprex name, but who knows if it's as good as the 1004. I'm leaning towards the Liteon at this point.

    Thanks LS.

Here is the info for the Emprex:

    Manufacturer: BTC
    MFG Part #: DVDRW 1016IM

So my question is, is this drive going to really excel at reading? I want something that rips where others fail.

I applaud your efforts, but if the disc is too far gone, no reader will read it. I believe the better route to take would be to buy a disc resurfacing kit and then you would not have to worry about it, because your drive would read a repaired disc.

I use the 1016IM, in fact I had two of them. I gave one away to my mom and they work very well.

Those home kits usually ruin the disc more. Pay a service to do it with professional resurfacing gear.
