i want a codec that converts fast and has god quality to. what is the fastest between xvid and divx if i convert a movie(700mb) in 2 passes? and what encoder should i use to hget the maximum performance and settings and quality of course? and how good is dr.divx and what can you compare it to? and is there any better encoder then dr.divx for converting to divx?

i'm asking you cuz i'm no expert. thx for your help

Dr. Divx isn't a encoder, it's just a front end to the Divx codec. I use VirtualDub Mod most of the time, but the encoder is what does the work, not the program that is the front end for it.

I prefer Xvid myself. Partly because it's free and partly because I seem to get better results from it. Speed-wise, not a lot of difference if you were able to set both of them up with the same encode setting. JMO.

  5. The best one is free, VirtualDub and its variants. Like redwudz, I also use VDubMod. If you also plan on encoding to MPEG-2, then you might want to pickup Procoder, but just for AVI encoding, don't bother.

Personally I like AutoGK (DGIndex/AVISynth/virtualdubmod) and the XVID codec. Why part with the hard-earned when freeware can give (arguably) same or better results ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

3 out of 3 so far have backed virtualdub (or one of its variants). You don't like it.

I don't mean to be rude, but maybe you just need to learn how to use it properly ?

(or alternatively, try AutoGK and see how it goes ?)
    If in doubt, Google it.

AutoGK uses VDubMod for encoding though anyway right? Really though it is about the fastest way to encode via VfW. Only avs2avi would be faster and not by much. Dr DivX 2.0 I believe is about the only non VfW way to encode via DivX, right? For XviD you have xvidencraw, mencoder and ffmpeg. Should maybe give you a bit more speed. Probably xvidencraw would be fastest (ICL vs. gcc).

My advice would be to try XviD and DivX and see which one is faster with your setup (hardware and settings).

Yep, but with generally optimal settings and uses AVISynth for filtering. I mainly suggested it to eliminate the "user-error" factor.
    If in doubt, Google it.
