    Hi

I bought this Pentium4 computer about 6mnths ago and now need more memory(for music/word etc files), only I don't know what to ask or look for.

How can I tell what memory I need?

    Thanks

    There are several ways,

Look in your motherboard manual or go to your motherboards home page to look.

Shut off your computer and pull out one of the RAM modules and see what it says on it.

Use a program like CPUZ: http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php This is the easiest method.

If you have a factory built computer, like a Dell or Compaq or similar, either go to their site or go to a memory manufactures site and put your model number in their configuration wizard and they will likely be able to tell you what you need.

You always want to double check to make sure you get the right type and speed of memory. They are not always compatible if you mix brands or speeds. And your motherboard may only accept certain configurations of memory.

But I would start with CPUZ. It only takes a few seconds to run, no install.

If you indeed have only 128MB of memory running XP, I could see your problem. Your motherboard probably uses DDR 400 (PC3200) unless it's more than 3 or 4 years old. I would go for a single stick of 512MB which you should be able to pick up for around $50US.

    And welcome to our forums.

And this is actually a computer question that would be better in the Computer forum. Moving you.
