It sounds like something may still be running that is blocking them. You might try to install them in 'Safe Mode'. Repair installs don't always fix everything, but you probably want to avoid a repartition/reformat/reinstall of Windows. Don't blame you there.

I have to assume the DLs were OK and none of the files were corrupted. Did you disconnect from the internet and turn off each and every antivirus/spyware/trojan/malware/ blocker program you have when you tried to run the upgrades?

  3. Never thought of safe mode.

What I'm worried about is the cleaned malware may have changed the registry someway.

That would be my worry also. Back up your important data and hope for the best.

I have unfortunately had some malware a year or two ago that pretty much destroyed my system and the only recourse was to repartition and reinstall. Then I imported my old favorites that I had saved from IE and all the crap came back. Never figured that out. Second time was 100% clean install, with older favorite file and it was all gone. Scary.

I assume you ran your antivirus/antimalware in safe mode, also unplugging the internet? Also delete or disable your XP restore file. If you did all this, you have the best chance of defeating it.

You probably can't fix the registry if it's broken, without losing the functionality of your installed programs, but that part is beyond me. Good luck.

  5. Do you have background intelligent transfer service turned off? This will cause the updates to fail.

Since it is downloading the updates but failing to install I'd say your windows install has been tagged as invalid and not entitled to the updates at this time.

Contact Microsoft 1 (800) 936-2197 and ask about validating your copy of windows. Have your registered product code available and system technical information.

  9. Sometimes the cryptographic service can cause updates to fail if the service is turned off.

  10. Thanks to all that helped. I checked services and found background intelligent transfer service set to manual (As it is on this computer actually) Set it to Automatic and started it, Cryptographic was running, cleaned out History in IE, And Cleaned out the Downloaded Program files folder in Windows using and Oldie (FX) at the Dos prompt. let it sit hooked up to the internet for a few. Then shut down, the updates installed fine and after powering up the other 46 updates downloaded and installed. Windows defender updated too.

So Thanks and hope this info helps others

Dude. You provided an option too.

I thought that is what puts the "help" in video help.

Check http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS06-007.mspx if all updates are failing. Check http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873148 if you're getting incomplete SP2 install and the "Access is denied" message. I had to run the registry permissions fix 6 times for the "Access is denied" message to correct all registry permissions!
