.NET Security Updates Fail

.NET security updates fail in WinXP SP2. I searched and found others have same problems with WinXP SP3 and no solutions posted in search results. Windows update keeps prompting to install updates, but updates fail every time it's tried. I even tried downloading KB979909, KB982168 and KB982524 which are the updates that fail to desktop and tried to install from there, but failure to install persists. Does anybody know a fix for this problem?

you might finally update to sp3 since sp2 is no longer supported and will not have any more security updates.

All .NET versions were uninstalled and then reinstalled after which updates installed with no problems.

My experience with the different .nets was that all the updates for .net 1 should be done before the .net 2 install, then all the .net 2 updates and then the later versions. Can't prove it, but it seemed when updates tried to do all of them in one session, the update program didn't do them in order. There must have been some interactions between the updates.
