Recently got Nero Ultra 7 for my NEC3550A DVD burner.

Just tried Nero7 mpeg2 video capture. Works ok though not as many features as the hauppage bundled software. Better picture though and with less artifacting. Few interlace lines ocassionally during a lot of scene motion but not to distraction. Now I need to edit the mpeg2 captures.

I see Nero7 has a feature that says MODIFY DVD recordings...which I assume includes editing mpeg2. Problem is it says "Please insert disc in drive" when I attempt to access the MODIFY feature. I can't imagine they would design the software so it doesn't let you edit dvd videos from your hard drive. Even cheesy nanocosmos editor lets me do that with my Mpeg1 recordings.

Am I doing something wrong here? Is this a software error? OR... Did Nero actually design the software so I First have to burn a disc THEN edit? I hope not. That would be a huge waste of time. If unfortunately....the latter is the case...is there any way to trick the program into thinking its looking at a dvd disc instead of video from my hard drive so it doesnt tell me "insert disc?" .... OR....do I need to capture directly to DVD RWs while recording....which I assume is possible thru the Nero capture software and providing INCD is installed.

First choice is I'd like to get Nero to work for me...especially since I just bought it.

Next would be other mpeg2 editors that work well. Free is always nice (free free....not trial period free).

Reasonalbly priced software also an option. Something that lets me edit DVD recordings from the PC or a standalone DVD recorder (which I assume is mpeg2 anyway...just at varying bitrates depending on recording length/quality settings).

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Dave

  2. One solution would be to create a DVD folder and then "Mount" it with Daemon tools which will make it appear to be a valid drive.

But, there better editors and encoders than Nero. Cuttermaran is a good, free one. You must demux the video first, however.

If you are cutting commercials, try Comskip.

Do NOT load Incd or any similar software. Bad, buggy, consumes resources, not always compatible, total waste of space, definitely has been found to be the source of some problems.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was hoping I'd get a few more replies but
    oh well.

I DL daemon...going to install and look it over. hope theres not a big learning
curve. I can prolly figure it out tho.

Not sure if it actually makes ISO files first or if i have to do that with Nero or other...
but i guess i'll find out.

I wonder if i make VCDs with my mpg1 files on em if they'll just play without converting
to mpg2 first? I'm guessing yes...but i'd still need to edit some. Might post that query in another area.

    Thanks again.

You can use VCD/MPEG-1 files with a DVD. You just have to convert the audio from 41khz to the DVD standard 48khz. The video doesn't need to be converted. Or if you just want VCDs, you can burn them to CD. Nero should be able to do that.

Most of us only use Nero for burning. It's not that great of editor, encoder or authoring program. There are a lot of programs available for those operations, some freeware. TMPGEnc is free for MPEG-1 encoding and does a good job. You can author with the freeware DVDAuthorgui. Or if you want to convert VCD videos to DVD, TMPGEnc DVD Author does the audio conversion automatically. For editing, the freeware Cuttermaran as mentioned works well. For a payware editor MPEG-VCR is popular.
