"BusinessWeek has a piece on how pornography is again leading the way and showing Holywood how to fight back against piracy. From the article: 'Some producers of porn are starting to share revenues from online movies with the distributors of their DVDs, who might otherwise feel endangered by digital distribution online. Bolder yet, one large studio is allowing fans who buy movies online to burn them from their computers onto DVDs, with some protections included, of course.'"

Once again -- pornography, leading the way. Is there nothing it can't accomplish?

I wonder what MARK TWAIN would say.

He is quoted as having said or written: "Naked people have little or no influence on society."

It was the porn industry's adoption of the VHS format that destroyed any chance that Betamax had of gaining significant market share. While this is more of a consumer choice, Hollywood DID abandon Betamax along with everyone else.

I think your history is a bit off here. There was a tremendous amount of porn released on Beta, for some time. What happened was that Sony shot themselves in the foot with some very bad business decisions, involving licensing and sharing proprietary stuff. (A bit like what happened with early Apple vs. IBM PC.) It was not a totally "closed architecture" as with Mac, and Beta hardware did ultimately come out under other mfr. brands (a few), but they were late and slow off of the starting block. By then, VHS was ubiquitous, coming out from every video gear mfr., at every price point they could make it.
