"Letterbox" became the standard term for fitting widescreen onto 4:3 screens. Is there a standard name for the sideboxing that fits a 4:3 image onto a 16:9 screen?

Whatever it is called, it is 90% of what ESPN-HD does, grrr.

Maybe it only seems like 90%.

Note that they always put the HD logo in the sidebars when they are upscaling 480i. Is it only me that notices that? Shouldn't it in truth be "SD" in the logo?

"Pillarboxing" is what I've seen most.

Pillowboxing is the term most people seem to use for when you watch 4:3 on a 16:9 screen with the 4:3 at the proper aspect ratio (hence black on either side).

Not sure who came up with the term though or why ... sounds silly to me.

I think they are referencing Greek or Roman architecture. Some useless highbrow PR harvard* graduate no doubt.

Ya, I was half kidding. One of you called it "pillowboxing" and then the other said it referenced Roman architecture. Hilarity ensued.

I've mostly seen the term "pillowboxing" but doing a quick google search I see that "pillarboxing" is also used.

    Go figure ...

I've only used pillarboxing, for exactly the reason edDV stated above.
