i have ripped a dvd and am trying to copy it to vcd but iam having trouble getting rid of the blocking.
iam using TMPGE i have selected soften blocks and i increased the bitrate to 2000 but i still can't get rid, i can't go any higher with the bitrate as the film (mummy returns) is 2 hrs long and if i use a bitrate any higher i need more than three disks so if anyone can help it would be appreciated.

fitz15,
Which scene or scenes are you having trouble with blocks on??
I've ben trying to work w/ some people on this to rid the blocks
though not very successful with some people's cooperation - NTL...
...How bad are YOUR blocks??
I guess you can say, its a work in process (minimizing blocks)
Here's the thread I started:
VCD - can we minimize most blocks in "The Mummy Returns" opening scene?
-vhelp -
ive tryed High Quality and it makes no differents.
i did try uping the bitrate which makes the blocks nearly go altogether BUT the file size increased that much i would have to use 4-5 cd-r's, which means changing disks every 20-30 min.
The scence im having the most problems with is the opening scene.

fitz15,
can you be more specific to scene?
Reason why I'm asking, is becaues when I encoded it, I cound't find any blocks
noticable. I've check where one guy gets tossed over the worrior's shield and still
coudn't find any noticable blocks!
As I've said at the thread I've posted in my first response to you, I am (was)
trying to help others in this area (kennyC specificly) and now a few more people
were added to this issue, but now they too have pretty much abandund my
help or attempts to help them with this blocks issue. I've tried very hard to
demonstrate with a sample, but to no avail. Anyways...
Can you be more specific in the scenes, ie, when you first see the gold shield,
is it blocky or distorted?

fitz15,
I'm only trying to help.
* what is your process, from DVD to VCD
...unless you don't think it's important
* which tmpge R U using (though prob. doesn't matter)
* these blocks, though you said are in the opening scene, are they in other places
as well?
* I don't think that using the soften blocks is really needed for DVD transfers to VCD.
it only adds way too much time to your enocde process, and that goes for upping the
quality, ie, high quality or super duper quality, etc. Pointless. It really all boils down
to your process, from start to finish.
* R your darks scenes blocky too or what
I just did a small encode of Contact, where the women (Jody) goes through the
wormhole. Now, you know that scene is gonna be blocky. if you've ever done that
that DVD, then you know what I'm talking about! Blocks City!! But I managed to
get rid of'em.
Has anyone done that scene in the movie "Contact" ???
Just thought I'd let you know that I'm viewing my sample of
these clips on both my Apex AD-500 and AD-1500, and you know
that others here complain about it's quality and how much
they show blocks even more so. So, imagegin playing on a
good DVD player.

vhelp, heh....why don't u just encode to SVCD or some hybrid of it to get rid of the blocks...
higher resolution, vbr instead of cbr, mpeg 2 compression instead of mpeg 1, etc..?
choosing a couple of those prolly will get rid of the blockiness... -
poopy,
I guess you ment for fits15. . .
I don't have the blocks issues (any more sort of)
I've ben horsing around with VCD for a while now and managed to come up
with a decet process that works for me, maybe not others, but for me it works.
Anyways, I was trying to help fitz15 narrow down the blocks issue.
Tanx anywayz!!

PS: it's snowing up somthing terrible here - hope it doesn't cancel work tamarrow, he, he... -
vhelp & poopyhead thanx for your help, i wasn't shore if all the hybrids worked on dvd players or not as im just getting started on vcd's but i have tryed a different settings and come up with a few results the best so far was mpeg-2, it got rid of all the blocks but i did lose some sharpness on the picture, it also kept the file size down enough to put it on to 3 cd-r's.
if you know of a way to get it down to 2 cd-r's i would like to know?
the problems i was having was that i was encoding them as m-peg 1, and the scences where as they charged towards each other it had a lot of blocks and as you see the main man runing towords the camara in the distance the quality was and is still poor.
