Hey,
I know macthe ripper has its own forum now, but I thought, out of loyalty, I'd check here first. So I received a bad sector warning from mactheripper after it was finished ripping (I was doing a full disc extraction), and it told me to make sure that the output played before burning. I played the resulting video-ts folder in dvd player and it played. I then went to dvd2onex (the previous version) to compress the file (this disc is approx three hours long) and with 99% complete and refusing to process any further dvd2onex gave me a warning about making sure that I was copying from dvd files ( I can't recall exact phrase right now) and then a second warning about an inability to copy the ifo file. When I stopped dvd2onex from processing (after it had refused to proceed any further) and attempted to play the resulting file with dvd player, it stated that this was not a proper media file, something along those lines). Anyone have any experience with these sorts of error messages and what you may have done to workaround them?
I would gratefully appreciate your input.
Thanks very much,

I would get 3.0r13d and give it a try. I use it and DVD2oneX2.0.5. I get great results from all the new releases I buy. Between the two, they take care of the bad sectors.

MTR 2.6.6. Is there a different version available? BTW, I tried to post to the ripdifferent forum and apparently the server is down or something.
Thanks -

The 2.6.6 persuasion of MTR is the latest freebie. You're seeing a new
copy protection scheme that 266 often can't handle. You should
probably get the latest beta of version 3.0 (r13d as of now). This
version is donationware.
You need to join the MTR forum at ripdifferrent.com, which can be a bit
of a hassle. Those folk are a tad paranoid. The announcements at the
top of the forum message list explain how to donate (any amount) and
acquire the newest version of MTR.
The forum is a terrific source for ripping information.
Hope this helps. -
The BEst of Youth uses blank (0 Mb) cells as a copy protection scheme. Oncee MTR is done, you need to use DVD2oneX and deselect the cells before compressing as Movie Only..

I wasn't going to go into that. It's a tad complex. An MTR
forum user gave the following instructions for backing up
only the movie from the "Capote" DVD -- about a week
before 3.0r13d allowed ripping the whole disc:
-------------------------------------------
User note:
Use MTR 2.66 and do a main feature ARccOS Extraction. It took
about 36 minutes on my powerbook 1.67 then use DTOX2 and
select movie only remove the first 10 cells and then burn using
Toast 7. I had no problems backing this up.
AMB Notes:
The 266 extraction seems to hang at the bad sectors. Be
patient. It'll get past them.
In DTOX (1 is fine, too) note that the first 10 cells are
zero in length. Just uncheck them.Al Bloom -
Well, I got the latest version of MTR 3.0R 13 release d and used it to rip the movie, full disk. However, I still got the warnings with dvd2onex version 1.4.0, 1, to use dvd files (something like that) and that 2, "Error adjusting the IFO file. It does not match with the VOB file."
I was thinking about upgraading to version 2 of dvd2onex ~$31.00. Would that take care of this issue? Or would I still have it? I don't have the bad sector warning with MTR any more; even though I received this MTR 2.6.6, the video_ts played in dvd player, so I guess the problem all along had been with dvd20neX not being able to match up the IFO file with the VOB file along with the earlier error message of somthing to do with using dvd files. If I insist on doing a full disc extraction, do I have to go with the latest version dvd2onex, assuming that it would work for the Best of Youth for full disc compression? And if I would be satisfied with a movie only compression, how can I deselect the problematic cells in version 1.4 in movie?
Thanks all for all your guidance here.

Just wanted to let you know I was able to deselect the problematic 0 MB cells in compressing the movie only version of "Best of Youth." I am not really satisifed, however. I would like to be able to end up with the full disc version. I suppose I have to upgrade to version 2 of dvd2onex, right? Is there any way to deselect these cells in the output of (or input to) MTR 3.0r13 version d and still be able to extract the full disc version of this film? (I like the menus I'm afraid). Probably not, as by definition, even if what I am asking about is possible, this would not be the full disc extraction that I am asking about, right? Apologies if this is an inane question. Just thought i'd explore it though....
Best,

You desellect the cells by first selecting main feature only, and then in the right hand pane, where the languages and subtitles are, click on the Cell/Chaptre/Layer tab and deselect the cells at the beginning that are 0 MB.
By the way, the menus don't really offer much except scene selection. Disk two starts in the middle of an episode no matter how you select it. -
If one does a title cell extraction in MTR 3.0r13 v d, cells popup that one is permitted to deselect; problem is I'm not sure which of the cells that are less than 0MB but not 0 bytes, ie., totally without content altogether are the cells that 0mb in size in dvd2onex that one can safely deselect and still receive a workable movie. (Some of the minimally sized cells have an Lb preceeding them: I am not sure if these are the cells that trip up the rip process or not, even though I was able to rip successfully, just not compress). However, what I am attemting to recover by tinkering with the input to MTR in Title cell extraction is not just the movie or main feature extraction. I am attempting to salvage some workable menus for the disc and maybe receive something approximating a full disc extraction, that is, an output with workable menus. But I'm probably asking for the sun, moon, etc., when I can barely secure a lesser celestial body, right?
Thanks again,
Best,

Well, I was able to temporarily get around this by using the trial version of dvd2onex 2.05. I was just wondering why people on this forum are not too enthusiastic about this application, apart from the clunky interface, which is not as self-explicable as version 1.4.0, which I have. Is DTox 2.0.5 really better than dvd2onex 2.0.5? I guess there are varrying opinions on that (BTW, I never updated to the last version of 1.4.2. Is that the final 1.4.x version out there, and can I still upgrade to that version from the dvd2onex site?)
I have a bias towards dvd2onex because I have the earlier version. But I was wondering which comression too produces the best results, or do i have to download thr trial versions of each and find out for myself I suppose. For instance, I am currently in the process of evaluating the compression results for the Best of Youth Disc 1, which is a three hour film. With the trial version of the latest dvd2onex I was able to obtain a full disc compression. However, i found the images at times to be a bit grainy. But I wonder if the compression engine of a different compression tool might not give me better results. I don't have the inclination, with limited funds, to obtain all that are commendable. I was just wondering if others would perhaps support me in my bias to continue with dvd2onex and purchase the upgrade ~$31.49.
Sorry this is not a more informed post.
thx. -

One and the same. Did you mean the 2.05 version vs. 1.42?
Frankly I don't see the reason for wanting the menus for this title, since there are no extras, and no individual buttons for selecting which of the six episodes to watch. The Chapter (scene selection) is the only navigation, and you get that with the movie only version just by pressing the chapter button on your remote.
I think the more important thing to stress is this is a really great series, a film novel worth seeing. [actually you get to read it, since there are subtitles]
