    Hello!
I just got an iMac with an older Pioneer DVR-104 SuperDrive.
They say not to use more than 4X DVD-R with that drive but here's the problem:
I have one of those Epson printers that prints on the top of the disc. I need 4x single layer discs that are printable (white). Are/were they ever made and where do I find them?
    Thanks!!

$37.50 for a 25 pack of Optodisc!!!!!!?????? If you bought a two pack, that's $75.00 plus shipping. Better yet, got to Rima.com, get a 100-pack of Taiyo-Yuden 8x and a new Pioneer DVR-111D. Total Price $77.98 plus shipping. Basically, you get twice as many DVD-Rs that are rated faster, are better quality and you have a great, new, fast burner for just $3 more.

You know I'd probably be doing that today except I don't know how much it would cost to have someone replace the SuperDrive in this iMac Flat Panel. Does anyone know how much THAT is?
    Thanks!!

If you update the firmware on the drive to the latest version, you can probably use Taiyo Yuden 8x hub printables. Another idea is to buy an external firewire burner like PX-716UF for guaranteed 8x or 16x printable media compatibility.

  5. Hello

Buy the current 8x or whatever speed and have the drive burn the discs at 4x. One of my omputers has a pioneer 105 which burns at a maximum of 4x. I have no problem putting in verbatim 16x discs. The disc just burns at 4x. Sometimes its easier to find the higher speed discs at cheaper prices.

    Regards

Looking at the Apple website, looks like there is a firmware update that would upgrade your Superdrive to 4x/8x compatibility for DVD-R.

    Thanks for the responses folks.
Who knows if the DVR-104 needed firmware or maybe it just wouldn't burn anything properly. It doesn't matter now because I took smithbret's advice and got a Pioneer 111D.
It worked out great. I took it to Core Care, the really great Mac authorized repair place here in Sacramento and they did it while I waited. MUCH better than the 3 week wait at the old place.

NOW to Office Max for some 16X Verbatim DVDs on sale this week!!

    Thanks a lot!!

I'm getting bulk cakeboxes of ProdiscF01 (8x/4x/2x/1x DVD-R General) with Full coat Inkjet printable, for .41/disc via Polyline (industr. vendor/catalog). They aren't nearly as good as say TY or MAM-A or some others, but I never get a bad burn unless there's user error. That's $41.00 (slightly more if in small qty's) (plus shipping) for 100!

There are lots of good deals out there.

edit: Note that these work fine in 104 (at 2x), 106 (at 4x) and 110 (at 8x), so you shouldn't have any trouble.
