  1. problems as well.

I capture football games with a ADVC-100. I then convert them w/tmpgence (usually at 8000KB's) and then author them using DVD-Lab-Pro. Then I burn them using Nero.

Sometimes when I play it on my tv (using my standalone dvd player) halfway into the game, you cannot fast forward as the dvd freezes. Or, it will simply just freeze. Someone described it as "cluttering" and that is accurate. Really, I have no idea how to solve this. It can be so many different problems, capture is bad, authoring is bad, DVD is bad (I use memorex dual layer)

So I was wondering...is this a common problem that you just have to deal with?

    Thanks for the replies.

First guess would be media. Verbatim seems to be the only DL media to trust. If you can play it back on your PC after authoring using Power DVD or similar, then it is unlikely to be an encoding or authoring issue. That leaves burning - I wouldn't use Nero to burn SL DVD video, let alone DL, or the media itself.

If you search for Dual Layer you will find some very good posts on solving DL problems.

Search for the DL posts. Often it is more than just one program - you need to get the layer break set correctly before you burn. These posts have all the details. To narrow the search, start in the DVD-DVDR forum.

  6. Yes, this is fairly common, but there are simple ways to Isolate and Identify the problem.

Capture - Playback the captured file on the PC before Editing, FF, RW, look for errors.
If standalone is compatible, burn test raw MPG file to DVD-RW and test playback. Test disk on PC as well.

Edit - Repeat PC playback test, ditto RW to standalone.

Encode - Possible you may be exceeding bitrate maximums for brief periods, try lowering to something like 6500 and step it up, 7500 would probably be safe if 8000 is indeed a problem
    Repeat playback tests

    Author - As above

Burn - As above. The RW disk will serve as a media test as well. Specifically include PC playback of authored DVD. This tests the standalone player itself.

Media - get some samples of various types, try for Made in Japan quality disks. There is no real way to tell what your particular combination of PC burner and standalone player may have issues with other than some experimentation. Basically, avoid cheap crap media.

By testing the file at each stage, you can fairly quickly isolate the problem. Capture will often have issues, but your re-encoding should eliminate these. My guess would be media testing required, though I would check the bitrate issue as well.
