There are at least 5 main formats of subs/cc in use and a lot of potential for error with overlaps, wrong format etc... so it's not as simple as you think.
I've had good success but with lot's of trial and error.
The problem with using virtualdubmod is you need the subtitler filter and it hard codes the subs right onto the video so you can't turn them on and off.
If your idx/sub files are ok then sub2divx should work. I have switched to this gui instead of avisub because in my tests with avisub sometimes the process looked good and even though the software divx player looked like it could select the subs the subs were not visible on playback.
You could try Subtitle Workshop and load the sub file. You can then check the subtitles as needed and save them to the SubRip format (srt). (ignore the auto link it's for ripping I mean the format) Then load that into sub2divx.
btw) I load 2 copies of the same subs (the new button) and move them to different locations (vertical scroll bar) and use white or yellow. That way you can select either of the subs and you get a different position and color on playback.

hi there!
thanx for the reply. buddy i even tried subtitlesworkshop but the moment i try to open the .sub file in it . it gives me an error message saying the .sub file i wrong and cannot be opened/format not supported.
okay...i need some education on subtitle. what format do the divx compatible dvd players understand? is it necessary to hard code the subtitles with an avi and then burn it on a dvd? cant we convert the .sub file to a format which the dvd player understands?
pls thrwo some light on this.

Hi-
...i even tried subtitlesworkshop but the moment i try to open the .sub file in it . it gives me an error message saying the .sub file i wrong and cannot be opened/format not supported.
Subtitle Workshop doesn't open the image based sub files in IDX/SUB format. It opens the test based SUB files. Those are 2 different formats.
what format do the divx compatible dvd players understand?
While I'm no expert on this, I don't believe very many support subs in IDX/SUB format. Your best bet would be to OCR them to SRT text based subs. I have no idea what, if any, subs your player supports. It varies by player and chipset. You haven't even mentioned the brand name and model number of your player. Check the DVD player database on this site and see if yours is listed, and if there are any comments about subs. A look at the manual, or an e-mail to tech support, might clear it up for you.
And no, it shouldn't be necessary for you to hard code the subs into the video. Save that as a last resort, since you don't be too knowledgeable about encoding. If I were you, I'd first try and convert the IDX/SUB to SRT. SubResynch, which comes with the VobSub package, among other programs, can help you do it.

You'll retain much better quality and it's much easier if you do this from your original DVD of the film, as opposed to converting to Divx and then back to MPEG for DVD.
I hope that helps. Good luck. There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

Your DVD-player probably only plays *.srt files for subtitles.
If so, you can convert the *.idx and *.sub to *.srt using SubRip.
It will take some effort on your part as it is an OCR type of proces, i.e. you have to "teach" the program to read all the different characters. It sems a slow proces at start, but once you've typed in a number of characters it speeds up: for a complete DVD it shouldn't take more than 15 minutes or so.
Run SubRip > click on VOB > click on Open IFO > manoevre to your subs file and open the *.idx.
Now select the language you want, click Start and start typing!
When done save your new *.srt and make sure it has name as the main file (except for the extension, of course) save it in the same map as your video. Now your player will recognize the subs.
Hope this helps.

digitalworkshop,
Try to find other format of subtitles for your film.
You could use this subtitle search engine:
http://www.subbiee.com/
Using this search, I have found .srt subtitles for your film on:
http://titles.box.sk
The .srt subtitles should work with your player.
