I have a sony 2000 & 2100 camcorders. I wonder if the new tapes made for the sony HD camcorders will improve my quality any? It says they conform to mini dv standards so they should fit. the tape I'm referring to is 13MDVS63HD. Somebody advise me please.

Should work. Some tape drive mechanisms do have feelers that read the tab holes to determine what kind of tape it is, and this might be a stopper for backward compatibility (DV tapes used in HDV cameras), but not for forward compatibility (HDV tapes used in DV cameras).

Yes, those tapes are supposed to have alot better dropout rate.

Sure is an expensive way to use DV tapes though!

As long as they say DV compatible they will work.

As for "improve my quality any?", well we can only assume you are talking about picture detail quality? Won't help with that. DV format sets resolution.

Will it offer greater signal to noise? Maybe, but again with digital video, that doesn't translate to picture noise, it means the dropout filters may kick in a few frames later on a head clog. It comes down to whether these tapes have fewer manufactured dropouts (good) or if they perform better with dirty or misaligned heads.

0's and 1's look exactly the same on all tapes. Better tape = longevity, stability, better tape to videohead contact, less volatile (other magnetic fields - storage and transport). This all means, as pointed above, less or no dropouts during recording and playback.

why don't you just buy Panasonic DV Pro tape they may cost more than normal tapes to buy,
but i bet they cost less than Sony HD tapes.

I never use 83 minit tapes any more. The long tape gets tight. Leads to tape stretching during rewind, then bad results after about 70 minits. I got some bad dropouts near the end of some brand new standard sony tapes. I try to never record all the way to the end. My daughter forgets this rule of mine and records till the tape stops. I have quite a collection of different brands that I have reused weekly in church for 4 years. I noticed that the old maxel's record right to the end with no dropouts. I have some 83 minit master quality panasonics that I refuse to use again. Who would have believed that... I have 4 weddings in June so I think I'll try some sony PHDVM63DM and see how they do.
