How do you update the firmware on your burner so that you get better burns?

How do you know which one to trust?

I have an LG burner and I want to update it.

  2. You go to the maunfacturers website and make sure you get the right version for your burner. If you get the wrong version, you could destroy your burner.

Once you get the right version, it usually has an installer. You would just double-click the installer and do not do anything else on your computer while updating or you could destroy your burner.

Bear in mind that most firmware updates only add recognition of more media types; they usually don't make burns better or faster. But that usually means using the latest firmware unless you've read reports that there is a particular problem with a firmware version upgrade, or if you plan on burning with old discs.

Generally, with regard to firmware updates, my feeling is that if it ain't broke don't fix it. If you are not having any problems, your burns are all fine and all your disks are being recognized then you are unlikely to see any sort of improvement by upgrading. Your burns will not get any better just because you update the firmware. Of course a bad update can ruin a drive as it is not without a certain amount of risk. That can be reduced depending on how computer savvy you are of course. Just because there's an update doesn't mean that you need it.

For the most part I would agree with those who say, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," but here is my experience. I have a Memorex drive which is a re-badged LG. It is listed as 8x max for both - and + R. It wouldn't recognize some 16x discs I bought (they were even Memorex's!), so I started trying to figure out how to make things work. At cdfreaks' site I found out my drive was a rebadged LG. I also found that I could use the firmware for a newer LG drive which would not only allow my burner to recognize these new discs but also increase the burn speed to 12x. I read all I could at that sight about how to do it correctly, and voila. I now have a drive that my computer lists as a 12x LG, and it is working at that speed and giving me perfect burns on all discs.

In your case you were having some trouble (disks not being recognized properly) so I would agree that an update was in order.
