I just built my new computer powerhouse. It's a Pentium Dual Core 4ghz x 2 ( I overclocked it), with 1gb dual channel DDR2 RAM and a 300 GB sata II hard drive + some other IDE drives. Basically, it's a very very fast machine!

I've tried Ulead Videostudio's DV to DVD wizard and it works well, however I can't figure out how to mute the audio on the pc whilst encoding.

Is there another software that allows me to convert DV to DVD mpeg2 directly?

    Any other advice please.

Are you looking for direct DV to DVD??
If that's the case, then why not buy a DVD recorder with DV input on the front??
It would be the fastest and cheapest way to do a transfer...

Nope, I want to use my pc. I just need a software like ulead video studio. I just want to encode DV straight to mpeg2 dvd format and then burn to dvd-r after.

I don't understand your problem with ULead Video Studio 9. The sound card should not be in the path at all.

ULead Video Studio uses a version of the Mainconcept MPeg2 SDK. The full Mainconcept MPeg2 encoder is available as a separate product. Download the demo to see if the $150 is worth it to you. I suspect you won't see much difference.

The problem in ulead video studio, is that when I capture direct to dvd mpeg2 format, there isn't an option to mute the audio so that I can listen other music at the same time. Anyone know how?

First, you shouldn't be capturing direct to Mpeg2 if quality is a concern. Capture to DV format using the IEEE-1394 inteface.

Second, you said you were using the DV to DVD wizard.

Neither technique uses the sound card unless you defined the sound card as the source rather than DV.

I haven't tried Santa in a while but it was quite poor a few years ago. It really makes little ifference anyhow because what you already have (Ulead) is almost certainly better.

It's a bit unclear what your issue is, but if you're going to be doing DVD creation, be prepared for your computer to act strange if you try and "multi-task". I usually unplug the internet connection and shut down any unneeded apps - including the virus protection in some cases (that's why I unplug the internet) before working with video.

You CAN do other things while the capture takes place in the background if you want, but I never want to waste hours and have a screw up bacause of a program conflict. During encoding, I NEVER have the computer doing anything else.

As EdDV said, better quality can usually be obtained by using a capture then encode workflow, rather than doing encode to DVD on the fly. Also, several capture tools like WinDV are not very processor intensive and can better be used for capture if Ulead is giving you troubles. Capture as DV type AVI. You can ten edit the DV video if you want to cut/add/soundtrack/effects/etc. Then Ulead's encoder can be used to convet to mpeg2.

I haven't tried, but I think there's a new version of VirtualDub that allows firewire capture to DV.

Once you've done that, convert the DV avi to mpeg with TMPGEnc and the author with TMPGEncDVDAuthor.

The main problem I have with ulead video studio is that when I do the dv to dvd wizard, it captures direct to mpeg2 dvd format, however the size is 6 gb for a 90min tape, and then it has to reencode once more to make it fit into a 4.7 gig disc.

    Use the normal process.
    1. Set DV as project format
    2. Capture to DV (13.5GB/hr.) over IEEE-1394
    3. Edit/Filter in DV
    4. Author/Encode to DVD, set bitrate for 90min = 6500Kb/s ave video, 224Kb/s audio

Never mind, I'm using nero vision and it encodes straight to mpeg2 format and I can mute the audio too! My pentium dual core 4ghz x 2 handles it with ease. I'm playing games at the same time.
