My current printer is long in the tooth so I'm in the market for a cheap reliable refillable printer. Mostly text with occasional graphics and pics. Speed is not an issue.
I just want to be able to buy bulk ink, pull the cartridges, punch a hole in them and refill them a few of times before buying new ones.
Is it true that Canon printers have no memory chips which either expire the ink or prevent manual refilling?
I'm not interested in constant flow systems or anything like that.
I've been out of the new printer/cartridge market for a long time so I'm a bit out of the loop on this.
Unfortunately this information is not generally available at point of sale, the companies make most of their money selling ink cartridges (low medium and full). That's not the exact term they use but imagine selling a 1/2 full cartridge for $35 or selling a printer with no color ink and low black ink or even minimal levels of ink just you have to spend another $100 or more for replacements within a few days after buying the printer. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that.

At least my two Canon printers can be easily refilled.
And also the cartridges for Canon I have seen are all
made of clear plastic. I can see how much ink left.
To refill Canon,
1) Drill a tiny hole.
2) Inject ink to the hole.
3) Seal the hole with a tape.
I also owned two Espon printers in the past. I throw
them away once its original ink ran out. -
got canon printer which can also be refilled
hacking the Net using typewriter :D -
My previous printers were all refillable too (pre chip technology).
Canon BJ200 (bw), bjc2100, Epson (model ?) sitting on basement shelf right now. They still work but text a bit faint and low dpi for pics. Still stretching my current reactivated durable but oldie Epson 640.
Salesmen in a couple of stores told me to avoid Lexmark although one also said he thinks that they are supposed to be refillable they both said they are junk when I asked about their $100 - $150 models. Wonder how the company reps would feel about those salesperson endorsements.
Any model numbers on those Canon? I just want to make sure I pick up something recent, refillable and decently priced. (fancy all in one gadgets not needed).
Thanks -
Info that I remember............
Canon introduced a new series of printers just before Christmas
(4200, 5200 etc) that have the chip and are not refillable.
The old series, 4000 etc are refillable but are hard to find.
