DVD plays on stand alone if disk is full but not on small vobs

First I like to say this formum is greatly appreciated and I have learned most of what I know about DVD frrom you guys. Thanks from a "nubee".
I've been burning DVD's since last xmas for movie backups and new compulations from my digital camera. I noticed that the only ones that played on my stand alone DVD player (Phillips) were the ones that contained large vob's that filled the disk. So I copied vob files to the DVD compulations that were only part of a DVD and and used ifoedit and dvd-to-one to reauthor and now they play on my standolone. I guess my question is "why does this work" and why don't the partly filled DVD's only play on my pc?

This is a known problem with some phillips dvd players ... just fill the disk up with other (junk) files but make sure they are outside of the VIDEO_TS folder

Thanks, I did not know you could add files outside the TS_VIDEO and still have it play.

Yup .... when the dvd is inserted in the player the player looks for the VIDEO_TS folder then plays it (whilst ignoring other files outside of this folder) ... some players also check that an AUDIO_TS folder is also present and won't play the dvd if it is missing so its always worth putting an empty AUDIO_TS folder on the dvdr (fortunately these players are few and far between)
