I'm an aspiring noob at this ()and have been a little confused with the myriad of posts about copying VHS to DVD. I downloaded a file to modify the firmware for my DVD to disable Macrovision (http://ilohacker.tripod.com/). It hasnt worked; I still get "Protected Content" message and still not able to reformat my VHS to DVD SCART to SCART.
I have a high spec PC and want to copy my ageing video collection to DVD I hope anyone can help!
Ideally I'd like to use my VCR to DVDR to convert my VHS tapes but I'm happy to accept any viable option; hope anyone can help!

Your source hardware needs to be de-MV'd.. that means your VCR. If there's a hack for your model VCR, then that w/b ideal. However, that's unlikely.. I think most here use some sort of pass-trhu hardware between the VCR and your capture/recording device (PC, DVD recorder, etc..), which would remove MV. Sounds like your are going from your VHS to your pc.. If so, you could use a relatively cheap field frame TBC (time base corrector) or a full frame TBC (more expensive). I use a Canopus ADVC100 capture device:

Then, with the resulting avi file (very large, btw ~20Gb), edit, re-encode, author and burn to DVDR. This process is a bit much for a newbie.. Unless you're ready for a relativley large learning curve, I'd suggest a DVD recorder, which would then entail picking up a relatively cheap device like this to remove MV (place it between the VCR and DVD recorder).. like various Sima color corrector models (~$50-$100).
I would start browsing/reading the Restoration forum here.. lots of info there.. Good luck.
