  1. Following the warm recommendations I had in a separate thread I downloaded and installed ImgToolBurn 1.2.1. But my first two burning attempts have not gone well.

On the first, the burned DVD-RW did not play properly. Yet when I then burned again (onto same disc) with Nero Express I got a good DVD.

The second may be down to my using the program incorrectly, so I'll try to spell out exactly what I've done. I've repeated this a couple of times (with same disc) with identical results:

    1. Inserted DVD+RW
    2. Autoplay started PowerDVD ready to play what was previously on disc, so I closed that.
    3. Started ImgToolBurn 1.2.1, and selected DVD directory (container folder for both VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS)
    4. Clicked Burn
    5. Message appeared: "The inserted rewriteable disc isn't empty. Do you want to overwrite this disc (all data will be lost)?!"
    6. Clicked Yes
    7. "Starting Erase" appeared in the Log section, and Recording Progress bar started moving to the right.
    8. When it got to about 20-25%, same message re-appeared "The inserted rewriteable disc isn't empty..." !
    9. Clicking Yes again just takes me round the same loop indefiitely. Clicking No aborts the burn.

From the comments in the separate thread ' DeepBurner Pro - then term 'IMAGE'?' by mats.hogberg and FulciLives this program clearly has a strong following, so I would much appreciate help in understanding what's happening here please.

What are you using as your burning engine ?

I think you have become confused when reading through the posts - not unusual in this case given the similarity in program names. If you re-read the post, I think you will find that they are talking about two seperate programs, imagetools classic, to create the ISO image fromt he folder, and ImgBurn to burn the image to disc.

Is this what you did ?

  3. You're spot on, thank you! I carelessly ended up getting ImgToolBurn instead of ImgBurn

  4. OK, I've now installed the right program, ImgBurn. But does this only accept an 'image' file as input? Can I not burn the video files I have authored, which are now sitting on my HD in a folder called VIDEO_TS?

If you have the ability to burn VIDEO_TS folders with Nero...then there really is no advantage to converting your VIDEO_TS folder to an .ISO image and burning that instead.

  6. Thanks. That's what I've been doing (directly burning VIDEO_TS folders with Nero). But in that other thread
    https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1511128&sid=011106160e84ee563a10db6fe236965a#1511128
I was recommended to switch to the 2-stage process. My understanding is that the extra time and trouble buys extra 'compatibility', i.e. a better chance that the DVD will be playable?

So I now aim to try that method and see if I can reduce my failure rate.

As you may also have seen, some at least of my failures seem to be down to media problems. And other puzzling issues such as reported here:

    and

So - these all muddy the water a lot! Coming to a truly objective conclusion about the respective merits of different burning approaches is a challenge

The only reason I have to use burning and .ISO image over burning folders is....I can use +R discs and DVDDecrypter(or ImgBurn) to bitset the discs to DVD-ROM.

The other main reason people convert folders to .ISO images is to keep the process "free"....using all free tools to go from a factory pressed DVD-ROM to a DVD recordable....from start to finish...free.
