    Hi,
My first time here. Recently bought a new Internal Norwood Micro DVD recorder at CompUSA. My computer (Desktop Dell 2400) has Windows XP home edition operating system. Whenever I place a movie dvd in the drive I am getting a blue screen saying windows is shutting down the system and I have to manually switch the power off. The Drive is able to read CD's and also burn CD's.
The problem comes when I feed a DVD, it is not able to read. If the DVD's are home made videos, it will not have a problem and I can use Nero Showtime to play.It does not have problems reading DVD's with special features with interactive DVD ROM.

The problem comes only if it is a movie DVD then the system is hanging up. It is not one dvd, I tried a number of movie DVD's to play.

I would really appreciate if somebody can reply me back with a solution.

    Thanks,
    Girish

The drive you have is a rebadged BENQ 1640 or 1650. Did you set the jumper setting correctly? Such as if the drive is master or slave? I suspect your dell pc is set up using the cable select mode instead of master or slave. If your dell pc is using the cable select mode on the optical drives such as the hard drive and cdrw/dvdrw then change it to use the master/slave mode. You would have to change your primary hard drive to master then use the rebadged BENQ drive set it to secondary master and use a regular ide cable. Cable select mode uses a different type of ide cable.

If that doesn't work then the drive could be defective and I would return the drive to COMPUSA. On the outside of the Norwood Micro box where the UPC code is does it say DW1640? If it does then it's a rebadged BENQ 1640 drive. If the drive is indeed a rebadged 1640 you could post your problem at the BENQ FORUM at Cdfreaks.com.

What other software do you have installed on your computer?

  3. I'm not exactly sure I understand which movies play and which ones do not. Definitely follow budz advice and confirm jumper settings first. I've never used the Nero player - it may be software issues/conflicts with it. Might try an uninstall/clean/reinstall of Nero if budz suggestion fails to fix your problem.

Weird issues are not that uncommon - I'm currently trying to find time to research an issue of my own. Old Dell 8200, Win XP Home SP2 with a NEC 3550a that spontaneously reboots when a DVD+R bitset to DVD-ROM (burned on a Benq 1650 or LiteOn 165H6S) is inserted.

    Good luck.
