How to, Sync audio to video

Sorry this might be a noob question, but I shot a video on minDV using a FX1, the audio didn't make it on the tape but made it on a backup MP3 recorder. I'm trying to use sony vegas to sync it up. I honestly just don't know what I'm doing and I'm sure there is a more simple way to do this. If I do get it synced up at one instance, it'll slowly loose sync.

I'm not so sure there is a simple way to do it. If the sync gradually gets worse towards the end of the video, then I would suspect the video and audio are different lengths.

VirtualDub may be able to tell you if the lengths are different in 'File Information'. Then you would have to adjust one or the other until they are in sync, or the same length. I hope the MP3 backup doesn't happen to be VBR, though I don't know why anyone would use VBR for backup audio, it would cause all kinds of problems.

Now you need to figure out how to adjust the length of one of the files and by how much. This is the not so easy part. Here's one method: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/140540.php The other method is to expand/compress the audio, though I haven't had much luck trying that.

EDIT: A couple of programs that may assist you are SyncView and HyperCube Time Stretcher. Neither one is all that easy to use, but probably worth a try.

It's a CBR backup.. unfortunately the video started half way in, while the audio was recording for a while before, so there is no real solid beginning, if I watch their lips and keep moving the audio around I can finally get it to look right, but it only lasts for a second or so... I'll try the vdub thing and see what's going on. I can edit the audio in cubaseSX and tell it what type of project I have, IE 30fps, 29.97 FPS etc... I did the 29.97 because thats what I was using, although it wasnt even close.
