  1. I still remember the first cd-writer that I bought (I actually doubt I will ever forget it, since it costed me an arm and a leg), but in that time, it was AWESOME. Just imagine, to have a removable device that was able to store a full HD, the biggest of it's time, in just one cd.... marvelous.
In that time, the biggest HD around was the 500MB, and CD writers stored 640MB... you actually had to put some effort in order to fill one CDR; but the growth rate of storage devices and media has slowed in comparison with the HD technology.
Today, I think the biggest HD is somewhere around 500 GB, that would mean that a comparable storage device should handle 600-700 GB per unit... and it's just not happening.

I wonder when the next generation storage unit will appear, and how will it work.... We are hungry for storage space, and doing backups in 4.7GB dvd's it's just not enough anymore....

Recordable bluray/hddvd are here or will be shortly. They'll be 25-50gb a disc. That will still take quite a few to do a whole 1/2terrabyte harddrive but for practical data not media that will suffice for most of us.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?
