I am hoping to get a tv out video card (very basic kind) and connect with my Win XP pro system. Am I correct to assume that what ever is displayed on my, will display on my tv?

More specifically, If I am playing a PAL movie via a player such as VLC (and it plays fine on the pc) on a NTSC tv, will it come out in roughly the same quality as what I would see on the PC?

In addition, is there anything "special" that I need to consider in my plan of using a basic video card and the vlc player and a basic tv to view such videos?

My end goal is to view PAL videos on the tv in an very economical way.....

    Thanks for your help!!!!!!!

Ati most stable , better output quality .
Nvidia , output quality below ati .

If you go the way of nvidia ... check out msi , mine came with 3 year's warrantee .
    (replaced albatron fx5200 128mb that didnt last 12 month's , also had 3 year's warrantee) .

As for tv out , you must have the tv hooked up before the pc is turned on , otherwise it will not be detected and you won't be able to sellect dual output mode's .

Is that true for nVidia? My ATI laptop can sense the TV out without having to reboot.

Why dont you just convert PAL to NTSC, burn to a 30 cent DVD+R, and wallah..

I use ifoedit to edit the ifo's for the PAL DVD and burn as NTSC.

One minor thing to mention. It won't be exactly the same picture. TV's have a small amount of 'overscan' that removes the outer ~5% or so of the picture when displayed. This can be a problem with some subtitles if they are at the bottom of the screen. But VLC may be able to adjust the screen, it has a lot of options.

The quality depends mostly on the video card output format. There are different options available, depending on your TV and card. Composite, S-video, component, or digital formats like DVI or HDMI, arranged in order of quality, though the last three can have very similar quality, depending on the card and settings. You are probably going to use composite, but S-video is a nice improvement, if your TV has that input.

    And welcome to our forums.

Just connect your headphone jack to the audio in on your TV.

Sound is output by your sound card, as above.
