I just used AutoGK to convert a DVD to AVI.
If it matters, the movie is Ocean's Eleven and it's 117 minutes long.
The movie supports Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Surround 2.0.
I used DVD Decrypter in IFO mode and ripped the relevant files. I opened it in AutoGK and by default, it picked English AC3 6ch. I wasn't sure if I also should have picked English AC3 2ch but I left it blank. The subtitles were set as "English wide". I set a target quality of 75%. Under the advanced settings, I chose "Original (AC3/DTS/MPA only)".
Two hours later, I'm left with a ~1.4 GB file that looks pretty good but it's really really soft. My speakers are the 5.1 Logitech z-5300e. I have to turn the volume knob so that it's about 50% in order to hear any noise. Normally, when watching the actual DVD (or anything else like listening to mp3's or gaming), I only have to turn it about 10%.
-Should I have left the audio settings to automatic?
-If I choose to have both 6 channel and 2 channel audio, what does that mean? How can I switch between the two? Is it automatic; say I watch the movie on a 5.1 surround speakers or I watch it on a television?
-Does setting the output audio to mp3's still allow for surround sound?

Answers as requsted...
1) If the volume is a bit low, you can always amp it with any of the audio programs, such as BeSweet (be sure to get BeSweet Gui too, as BeSweet is a VERY hard program to "get")
2) You can switch between the two if your audio player can decode both types. Usually on TV you only have stereo but most DVD players will downmix to stereo. TO get true 5.1 (or 6CH) you need a Dolby compatible receiver and the appropriate linkup on a TV. It's NOT automatic.
3) No, MP3's are stereo only. That's why AC3 is invented... supports more channels. -
Hi-
The AC3 audio is untouched. So, the quiet audio is caused by your AC3 decoder. If you have the AC3Filter installed, then go into the AC3Filter Configure and change the Preset to Loud. Either that or fool with the sliders. That's for computer playback. If watching on a standalone DVD/MPEG-4 player, I dn't think you'll have any audio problems.
I don't think you'll get 2 AC3 audio tracks from AutoGK. Doesn't it convert the second one chosen to MP3?
You switch between the 2 audios by using a player that supports that. I use Media Player Classic. -
I believe you're right about the AutoGK converting the second track to mp3. Anywho, I play most, if not all my files in Winamp so there's something missing I assume.
I tried Media Player Classic and it worked and I really don't like fiddling with defaults or installing more programs; I guess it's what I'm going to use. Thanks for the suggestion. Although, I was also ripping some TV series, i.e. Arrested Development and those worked just fine (but they only have 2 channel audio and I did mp3 for that).
I don't really care about the computer playback for the most part as I was hoping I could acquire a Modix, Mvix, etc. and place all these files on there.
Thanks for the replies.
