  1. Is there a way to see the installation numbers that was used to install XP on my pc?
    From with in the PC?

  4. Product ID can be found by right-clicking on My Computer->Properties...but I think you are looking for the Product Key to install,if you have the receipt you can call MS for a new one.

    they are not illegal -- they just tell you what YOUR key was if you lost the disk .... this info is often required by MS also

  7. Keep in mind that if you bought a brand name computer the Porduct key will not match the one on the license included with the computer and the number in the computer will not activate.

    IE a Dell for example has a unactivatable key used in its preload. This is fine as it doesn't need activation. And the one that Dell sticks on the side generally will not activate over the internet. It needs a phone call to activate. E-Machine product keys OTOH seem to activate easily over the internet. My Theory is that it depends whether or not the maker gives MS the product keys it uses. I could also be real wrong on why.
