In a surprising turn of events, Microsoft has stopped the use of DRM.

In a press conference held yesterday, David Ivey, Head of Microsoft Content Management Division said that the software giant will no longer rely on its often disparaged system of locking down its media content. DRM, or Digital Rights Management, is special code in media files which allows limited viewing only on authorized machines. Ivey had this to say about the controversial move:
"Microsoft has always been at the forefront of providing digital media for the next generation of computer systems and beyond. We feel that, in attempting to thwart piracy, we have inadvertently hindered the use of digital media by our valued, legitimate customers. We have chosen to use other avenues in the war against piracy that will not hinder or alienate our true customer base."
