Thinking about adding more ram to my Dell laptop which currently uses:"200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 400 (PC 3200)" Ram.

When looking on newegg i see other notebook ram that looks the same except it says "DDR2". Whats the difference between DDR and DDR2? Would it work in my notebook that uses normal DDR?

I've noticed DDR2 Ram is cheaper. A 1GB of normal DDR is like $86, but DDR2 is about $65.

    Any ideas would be appreciated

No, your laptop must be designed to take DDR2. Only the newest do.

DDR2 has a much HIGHER CAS rating (usually around 5 instead of 2-3 like DDR) but it more then makes up for it in other ways. I think its one reason DDR is cheaper to buy then DDR(1).

My laptop is a recently bought Dell Inspiron B120. I just read two reviews of those who installed that type of ram into a B120.

BTW one review is of a B130,but its the same as B120 only with a bigger screen.

Also if i decide to just go with normal DDR ram, question: Does it matter if i mix ram speeds?

My Dell currently has a PC3200, but i see some good deals on PC2700 Ram. Would it still work if adding different speed of ram into the free slot?

If you go with slower ram your best case is it will slow all the ram down to that speed.

Kingston says the B120 is DDR2.

edit: if you put in faster you are fine, it will go at the speed its designed to run though and no faster.

I just used the PC5300 version of this one in my new Macbook Pro, its good stuff.

Whoa you're right. I just re-checked crucial.com and it says B120 uses DDR2 ram also. Don't know why i did not notice that before....

I'll be going with DDR2 ram then.

Edit: Re-checked bios too. Also says DDR2 Ram.

A few mobos with VIA PT880 Pro chipset will support DDR and DDR2, but not at the same time. I have not seen any laptop build with this chipset.
