Aren't they all under some unholy long warranty for stuff like that?
I'd check an iPod-oriented site for similar problems like www.ilounge.comFB-DIMM are the real cause of global warming -
Sounds like the software is bad. I'd search the net as there are sites that explain how to update the software if it works in disk mode. There are different methods depending on what generation you have. But we got a lot of themn going again by updating the software. If you get it running themn run the disgnostics on the drive. It may have bad spots.
You will have to search but the information is out there.
Good Luck -
You tried this yet?

Flash drive? Is this an Ipod Nano? If it's an Ipod Nano, you should have alot of warranty left. If it an original Ipod or Ipod Photo (20gb, 30gb, 60gb, etc), these are not flash-based.

Well, when he says connects in disk mode it sounds like the older hard drive based models. Unless they use the same terminology on a Nano? Nano I haven't opened up yet, no hard drive in it? If flash I hope they used good memory as flash memory wears out with to many writes.
faustus, that's one of the links i was referring to, just didn't recall where i had seen it. A restore vs an update could help. As could running the disk diags in the ipod after a restore to be sure no bad spots. -

can you see the drive my computer when it is hooked up to the computer? if so you could try running a surface test on it. I'm sure there are some utilities you try and see if the drive is bad, you'll need to search the net for them. You will need one that works over firewire or usb depending on which you use.
What happened after the restore? that should have wiped the drive by rewriting the software. -
Try this
To reset an iPod with a Click Wheel, including:
* Fifth Generation iPod (also known as iPod with video)
* iPod nano
* iPod with color display (iPod photo)
* iPod (Click Wheel)
* iPod mini
* iPod mini (Second Generation)
1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
2. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.
To reset iPod, iPod (scroll wheel), iPod (touch wheel), and iPod (dock connector)
1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
2. Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons until the Apple/iPod logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.
If you are still unable to reset your iPod, use only one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Menu button.
When you reset iPod all your music and files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost. Date and time is preserved (unless the iPod reset itself because it had no power and then was reconnected to power). Other customized settings, such as Bookmarks, On-The-Go Playlists, Shuffle, Backlight timer, and so forth are preserved from the last time the hard drive turned on.
iPod not responding
If your iPod does not respond to these steps, see additional steps in the "iPod troubleshooting basics and service FAQ".
Additional Information
Apple releases new versions of the iPod Software Update application from time to time. These later versions may include new functions or improvements to existing features. Learn about updating iPod's software.
To return iPod to its original factory settings, use the iPod Software Updater utility to restore iPod. -
Then do this with the latest software update for your ipod
