I would blow everything out and do a re-install of Windows or whatever operating system you are using.

I've been AVG/Kerio on WinXP for 3-4 months now, works well. Better than Norton.

I tried AVG once and it totally fucked up my computer man but that was a long time ago ... lost track of time but it was at least 3 or 4 years ago.

    Maybe it's better now?

I've been using AVG on several computers for some time now with no problems. I gave up on Norton a few years ago.
I use Spybot S&D and Spyware Blaster along with it. You have to manually update the last two as freeware versions, but they all work well together. I have a hardware firewall in my router, but am experimenting with software firewalls.

Norton (and other antivirus programs) don't like to be uninstalled. You might try booting in safe mode, then the Norton drivers won't load and it may be easier to uninstall.
