Do you use Norton anti-virus or freeware of something else?

I bought Norton last year for the first time ever. I'm not sure it helped anything but take up a lot of memory resources...is there a freeware of something popular enough out there that you use?

I use AVG free antivirus (and Super-Antispyware as a secondary protection). Norton has always been notorious for hogging system resources, and slowing down computers, and it can be a giant pain to get rid of, once you have it on your computer. Norton antivirus is almost as bad as having a virus on your computer, haha.

Avira is another free antivirus prog out there, and I am sure you will get other suggestions. The bottom line is, you don't have to pay to have decent antivirus protection.

purchased norton 360 probably should of got Internet sec and it was heavy on my comp compared to kaspersky which i've used for years and has gotton rid of every virus or malicious ad it's come across also AVGfree is ment to be highly rated in protection compared to avira which underperforms so if you don't want to spend money then get AVG.

Microsoft Security Essentials is good. It downloads security updates as part of auto updates and has trapped or warned some bad ads. Norton is like a nagging you know what. And always wants money.

YUP..Avira free is still rated by several as one of top 3 for virus detection. Almost no drag on system performance.

Personally I like the new Norton Anti-virus with Anti-spyware. I find it to be light on the computer, both the P4 3.2Ghz and the I7. I wouldn't bother with the Internet security or 360 versions. I click on the Support button, then new version check and if their is a new version I can upgrade easily.

The new versions are much improved over the older 2006 versions for example.

Of course I'm only paying around $12 for it for the one year coverage. Every now and then NewEgg puts the 3 license version on sale really cheap. Sign up for their email service.

Have used Avira and ad aware for YEARS, I have all pop ups blocked , NEVER open anything unless I KNOW it is good, have not had an incident again for years.

I get Norton Security Suite free with my comcast account, that's what I currently use. haven't had an issue with it hogging memory. I have used AVG in the past, and I installed that on friends and fam pcs who had none. I currently suggest Security Essentials to friends now and haven't had any complaints. I also use Spybot and occasianally SuperAnti-spyware

Small footprint, low resource use and catches everything. Costs about $30, but it's worth it. I've used some free AV programs, they are OK, but NOD32 is easier to use and a real professional product.
Norton is a resource hog and good luck installing all of it when you decide to go with something else.

I use NOD32 on my laptop. Microsoft SE on everything else.

My vote today is for Ad-Aware - it's amazing IMO.

Yes, there's a very good free version, but register it - it's worth it. As well - hint, hint - the free version has some nice... *cough* *cough* dis- *cough* *cough* -counts....

I remember when, years ago, conventional wisdom said: "Use Norton". Then, if you have no funds, the token, and standard, free app would be AVG.

They were good ... once.

Today Norton and AVG remind me of those big fat cats that sit around, eat, sleep, belch and do nothing and the mice come out to play and have a party. They DEMAND, DEMAND, DEMAND (ask for money and hog your PC) and do NOTHING.

Ahhh, boy did that Trojan have fun and laugh at AVG not too long ago until Ad-Aware came to the rescue to give it a good spanking...

PS: I remember something called Panda way back when that wasn't bad... should look into it again...

microsoft security essentials, Malware bytes pro (got the deal fo $14 for lifetime ), kasperky antivirus (disabled most of the stuff tough).

i dont have any experience with avast...lets save good for next time.
