I want to cut a scene out of an avi clip. I opened the avi into Virtualdub and got this error,

[!] AVI: Variable bitrate (VBR) audio detected. VBR audio in AVI is
non-standard and you may encounter sync errors up to 15119ms when
attempting to extract WAV files or processing the audio in Direct Stream
Copy mode. Full Processing mode is recommended to decompress or recompress
    the audio. (bitrate: 126.2 ± 17.4 kbps)

Of course, when I cut the clip I got a large delay in the sound. I would like to cut the clip in Direct Stream Copy mode so if anyone can tell me how to proccess the audio I would appretiate it.

Set Direct Stream copy for the video and Full processing mode for the audio. Compress it to MP3 CBR and save this new avi. Use this new avi to cut.

  3. Forget that. Why reencode the audio if it isn't necessary? VDub doesn't support MP3 audio, so why are you using it in the first place? Use VDubMod instead. Open the AVI, hit "No" to the stupid message, and then cut and save as you did before. You can do the same thing using Nandub, and it doesn't even give you any opening messages.

  4. er...hate to bust you out manono, but it will do EXACTLY the same thing in virtualdubmod......the "stupid" message that pops up is warning you exactly of this.....basically what it means, is whoever encoded the video in the first place didnt know what they were doing and used VBR audio instead of CBR........only PROPER way to fix it is to decompress it to wav then recompress it using CBR......any other way will cause problems....

  5. Nonsense. Hit "No" and no asynch.

Virtualdubmod seemed to work. If I ever have this problem again it will be nice to have several solutions. Thank You.

  7. Thanks for reporting back, Jas47. Now, I have something to say on this subject, and you, whitejremiah, are going to bear the brunt of it, since you foolishly said things about which you know nothing.

er...hate to bust you out manono...

That was my laugh for the day.

...but it will do EXACTLY the same thing in virtualdubmod...

Hardly. VDub doesn't give you the option NOT to rewrite the header. It does it anyway, and you then get out-of-synch audio.

...basically what it means, is whoever encoded the video in the first place didnt know what they were doing and used VBR audio instead of CBR...

"Basically" people that make statements like that don't know what they're talking about. I know that's the company line around here, trumpeted by people who should know better. VBR MP3 audio was proven years ago to be of better quality than a CBR MP3 of the same bitrate. I don't know why it's even a subject for discussion and debate any more. All Jas47 wanted to do was to cut a piece from his AVI, and he got 2 suggestions to first convert the audio to WAV, and then to reencode it to CBR MP3. I've made maybe 2000 AVIs over the years, beginning before Nandub came out. Except for my very earliest ones, all used VBR MP3, all of them, with no problems of any kind -- ever. No problems cutting pieces. No problems doing format conversions. No playback problems either on the computer or on the 2 standalone DVD/MPEG-4 players I've owned. The only problems that might arise are if users try to work with them with apps that don't support VBR MP3, such as VDub, or try to do conversions with programs that can't handle VBR MP3, such just dropping an AVI into some program for creating a DVD. These problems all result from program insufficiencies or user error or incompetence, and have nothing at all to do with VBR MP3 being "bad" (as I see it called all the time around here).

...only PROPER way to fix it is to decompress it to wav then recompress it using CBR.

If it ain't broke, don't "fix" it.

any other way will cause problems....

Evidently Jas47 didn't have any problems once he learned the right program to use to cut his AVI.
