I have lots of TV series on VCD that I want to combine to DVD's. I just spent several hours reading authoring guides, downloaded several trials... and like the ease of TMPGEnc DVD Author,...but it locks up on last step (goes like 2-3% then says Error at #### and quits) ...thought this was due to running 98 but locks up on my Win2000 machine also, any sugestions on what to try? Or even sugestions on programs that create menus and have a free trial?

I know TDA is not guaranteed to run on W98, but W2000 should have no problems. With W98 the FAT32 file system is somewhat of a limitation anyway.

You could try the trial version of DVD-Lab. A little more complex than TDA, though. Or the freeware DVDAuthorGUI. Both will do what you need.

Are you trying to input the VCDs directly into TDA?
If so, this is most likely your problem. They are not DVD compliant, especially the audio.

Actually VCD video is within dvd specs, the audio is not but TDA should accept it and convert it from 44 to 48.
I have put tons of vcd's to dvd with TDA.

Otherwise pretty much what redwudz said.

from your specs you should be able to run WinXP no problem.

I converted the VCD's back to mpg's..the audio was already DVD compliant at 48 khz. So according to most...it should have been doable.
I had the trial version of DVDlab but it expired before I could figure out how to use it.

VCD's in spec do not have 48khz so somewhere along the line the audio must have been converted otherwise they were not true VCD's.

Well as much as I am opposed to it, I guess I'll start backing up the hard drive for a clean install of XP. Then we will see if it works...though I am more than sure that I will lose some of the other programs that are working now. Thanks for the sugestions...anyone else who has had these problems...check with me in a couple days to see if any thing works : )

Well guys, that didn't do it. No better with XP. Using full version of TMPG DVD author 1.6. I need to write down exactly what it says....but when you go to output...goes like 2% and says error at #### then quits. VCDs have were non-standard and converted back from dat to mpg. Audio was and is 48khz.

How about just for shits and giggles, creating an MPEG file that is totally unrelated to this source and seeing if it can author that ?
    If in doubt, Google it.
