  1. I have some rather nice quality xvids that I want to put on DVD

I use TMPGENC and it works quite well the results are quite tolerably most of the time

the problem is tmpg seems to CHOKE on some files and I can not seem to figure out why ??

they play fine. but tmpg freezes up (I have to forcefully terminate it)

but only on SOME xvid files if I try to move the slider to check my Cropping it will freeze up at some point (I have given it as long as 10 minute to unfreeze no joy)

if I DONT move the slider and just get through the wizard when it STARTS it freezes withing seconds and eventually tosses up error boxes but they are small with only an ok button and the only message is apparently random numbers.

I have the kilite codec pack installed. I just found and installed the xvid codec in case it was something about the codec I have to no avail

I use tmpgenc because it will let me crop 100 pixels from the left and right to get a full screen result. (not fond of widescreen :-)

    Suggestions ?

That's probably the source of your problem.

I would suspect K-lite also. If not causing problems with TMPGEnc, then it will likely cause them somewhere else. Do a forum search for 'codec pack' and then you may want to uninstall it.

Check your audio for AC3 or especially MP3 VBR audio, as it commonly causes problems with TMPGEnc encoder.

Another more obvious problem is PAL video converted to NTSC, or odd framerates or frame sizes.

  4. I installed 3.3 of tmpgenc and I do get a somewhat english error now

There is no quoted number of Character-string '%.2f'.

All one line - this is ONLY with xvid. I whack a lot of files with tmpgenc and this is the first time its ever given me trouble.

I have also never really messed with xvid in the past.

Suggestions on what to use besides the codec pack ? (its never given me problems otherwise)

  7. that defeats the point IE I like the simplicity of TMPGENC and on top of that no other program has produced such crips results in such a short time.

I sound the SUPER encoder decode program and it did quite a nice job even if it took quite a long time. the results are not as nice or fast as tmpgenc but they were quite tolerable. I just wish I could figure out why tmpgenc pukes on some files and not others.

Super is also Free which is nice :-)

  8. BTW I uninstalled the codec pak and installed the xvid codec alone still no joy. Same error. I will find a computer without the codec pack and see if it changed anyhing (doubt it though)

  9. Does your source have VBR audio? That always causes trouble for TMPGEnc.

Frameserving with virtualdub is not complicated at any way.
You just drug and drop your file to virtualdub and hit "frameserve". That creates realtime a dammy file you load to TMPGenc and you do your stuff like you do by loading your source direct to the encoder.

Unfortunatelly, there are sources that without frameserving you have issues.

avisynth is a faster way to frameserve, but indeed some people find it more complicated (including me)

Strange character in the file name? (2F=/)
