I don't want to state the obvious here, but Terence Howard is black. He plays a black pimp in "Hustle & Flow". Not only is he a black pimp, but he is also a would-be rapper writing lyrics about the things he knows. In other words - It's just a movie.

I thought it was kind of catchy. Of course, I could care less about what the lyrics said as most rap is just stereotyping a minority of a minority and ultimately giving a bad rap (no pun intended) to the majority of that minority (does that make sense). There is enough misunderstanding/ingnorance/intolerance without propegating minority stereotypes.

Actually, the author of that article seemed to be more miffed that Fifty Cent missed the Oscar nod and totally forgot that Fifty Cent's entire image is based on a minority stereotype.

Outside of hiphop, is there currently any other musical form that glamorizes the lowest common denominator of human culture (violence, drugs, misogyny, etc.)? Since the overwhelming majority of hiphop artists are of one race, it tends to "reflect" on that race as a whole. Unfortunate and unfair, perhaps, but a fact of life. And when someone receives an award for it, it just tosses more salt into the cultural wound (and the chasm between those who like hiphop and those who hate it).

Thats like saying Country music reflects poorly on all Whites. While I detest the music, I dont feel it makes me look bad. Nor do I hear my professional Black friends/colleges complain the same. The ones that dont like rap just consider these rappers "clowns".
