What stores have you checked? My local Bestbuy had a couple units. They were $169.99, which is $10 more than bhphotovideo.com. So when you factor in the tax vs. shipping, they come out to be around the same price. Why not order online?

eBay also has tons of cheap refurbs (if you like that sort of thing).

It looks like Best Buy has dropped the price of the Toshiba D-R4 to $159.99:

Price drop...hmm...maybe they're getting ready to clear out the d-r4 for the d-r5 since it is out now. Better decide now whether you want the 4 or 5, cause you might not have too much time!

  5. I picked up 2 D-R4s on ebay for around $62 each that work fine. You could almost buy 3 of them for the price of a new one. Returns Central has them up almost every day, I've seen them sell as cheap as $31.

Are they refurbs, I take it? (not that there's anything wrong with that)

    Question:
Is the D-R4 a great DVD recorder?

There is one on Central Returns right now...

Excellent recorder. I've used 4 Panasonics, a JVC and a Pioneer, the Toshiba beats them all. Picture quality is awesome.

I'd prefer a refurb to a new one. Quality control at the manufacturer may check 1 out of 10 (or 1 out of 50) as they come off the assembly line. They check 1 out of 1 for refurbs.

Right on. I worked for a distribution of office equipment, the refurbs always had a lower return ratio. I also worked for a manufacturer, not of a/v equipment, we had a seperate rebuilt equipment area. The guy in charge of the area had 20 yrs experience. The rebuilt equipment was great. Its a great option.

So it looks like best buy has clearanced the dr-4, in my area they are all out of stock, also the website is out of stock,
Does this mean the dr-5 is coming to best buy? does anyone know when?
Is it the same, is it worth buying this one or trying to get the dr-4?

No one here has tested one yet. Unfortunately they're about $50 more right now anyway.
