I am currently trying to do some video capture and encode it into xvid codec

So I capture the video with MPG2 at 720X480 resolution using a video capture card with a composite video cable coming out from my DVR Box

I edit the clips using ulead videostudio9 to cut out commericals and what have you and produces a 23 miniute video

What I want to know can I produce either 512X384 or 640X480 22 miniute video with High quality and around 200MB File. Is it possible? if so can you explain or give me a link on how to acomplish this task.

Also I have been reading different sites on how to configure xvid to get high quality and low file size, so can you help me out by telling me how to configure xvid correctly to get what im looking for

your help would be very much appericated

Look to 'Tools' to the left for the Videohelp bitrate calculator to use with Xvid. If you plug in your video running time, it will show you the bitrate required. If you convert the audio to MP3, you will have more room to up the bitrate. Look into 2 pass encoding also to keep the bitrate lower.

For fine tuning, try a representative 5 minute clip to see what settings work best. Some videos can also benefit from some light filtering to optimize the bitrate use.

Wonder how does AutoGK construct its test clip for the compression test? It's not the decimate filter... Maybe it just uses AVS scripts or VDub Scripts to sample the pieces periodically? Like 30 seconds every 5 minutes?

It depends on what is more important, end file size or quality.
Simple way to get quality is to set the 'Target Quantizer' to 2 and you should get the same quality as the original. But the encoded result may be bigger than what you want.

If you want to control the filesize, you can the 'Target Quantizer' again and you will see a bitrate calculator to the right. Use that to set a size. Smaller size=less quality.

You can also set the 'Encoding Type' to two pass. This will make a longer encode, but it should end up better quality if you have to use a lower bitrate to get a smaller size.

You can use a program like VirtualDub Mod and cut out a clip for encoder tests.

Here's one guide for Divx/Xvid conversions:

Not really. It's up to you.
Most DVD rips on the internet are 512x384 at around 1200 to 1500 kbs XviD compression with MP3 audio. Do not use, I REPEAT, DO NOT USE VBR MP3 audio.

If you want to use full resolution then I would set the bitrate to 3000 but most TV broadcasts don't use that high of resolution. I believe 480x480 is the capture resolution of choice if your card can use it.

If you're going to edit the captures, I would use Huffy or Lagarith lossless compression (probably full resolution) for capture and use Virtualdub to cut out commercials and compress to finished XviD AVI.
